The story
The 3 Series grows up.
The E36 was a clean break from the boxy E30. It was lower, wider and more aerodynamic, with a multi-link rear suspension that made it much more stable at speed.
Purists didn’t love it at first, and for years it was the cheap, forgotten 3 Series. Then values started to climb, especially for the M3. In the US the M3 debuted in 1995 with a 240 hp engine. That was less power than the Euro version, but at a price many more people could afford.
Today the E36 is coming into its own as a collector car. It’s easy to live with and still affordable, and clean, original examples are disappearing fast.

Why buy one
Pros
- Modern enough to drive daily: airbags, ABS, decent AC.
- The M3 is still one of the best-value performance cars around.
- Huge aftermarket and plenty of parts.
- Prices for non-M cars are low.
Think twice
Cons
- The cooling system is plastic and fails if it hasn't been replaced.
- Interiors age badly (door cards, headliners, seat bolsters).
- US M3s have about 240 hp against 286–321 PS for European cars.
- Many cars have been modified or tracked hard.
Buyer's guide
What to check before you buy
Cooling
Water pump, radiator, expansion tank and thermostat housing. If there's no record, budget for a full refresh.
Chassis
Rear trailing-arm bushings, rear subframe mounts, and the front control-arm bushings. Check the rear shock mounts.
Engine
VANOS rattle on M50TU, S50 and S52 engines. Look for oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing.
Interior
Sagging headliner, cracked dash, broken door card clips and worn seat bolsters.

Where values sit
Non-M E36s are cheap, often under $12k for a good 325is. US M3s average in the low $30s, with the best ones much higher, and the Lightweight and Euro GT are six-figure cars.
