The story

Built like it would last forever.

The E34 was a huge step up from the E28 in refinement and safety, and it feels it. Doors close with a thud, and the car feels solid on the road. It’s the 5 Series where BMW started to chase Mercedes on luxury.

The early cars used carryover six-cylinders, including the big M30 in the 535i. From 1992 BMW introduced V8s, and the 540i with a 6-speed manual became one of the great sleeper sedans.

The M5 was the last one assembled largely by hand at BMW Motorsport. In the US it came with a 3.6-liter version of the S38 straight six. It’s subtle and fast, and today it’s often called the best-value M car.

Why buy one

Pros

  • Feels bank-vault solid, even after 30 years.
  • The M5 is an analog super-sedan bargain next to the E28 and E39 M5s.
  • The 540i 6-speed is a rare manual V8 sedan.
  • Classic, understated styling that has aged well.

Think twice

Cons

  • Early M60 V8s can suffer from Nikasil cylinder bore damage.
  • Electrical issues (pixels, central locking, climate control) are common.
  • Heavier and less nimble than the E28.
  • Parts for the M5 and V8 cars are getting expensive.

Buyer's guide

What to check before you buy

V8 engines

On early V8s, ask whether the block was replaced or tested for Nikasil damage (rough cold start, poor compression).

Cooling

Radiator, water pump, expansion tank and hoses. Overheating is a common killer of every engine in this range.

Electrics

Instrument cluster pixels, the onboard computer, climate controls and the central locking.

Chassis

Front thrust-arm bushings, rear subframe mounts and self-leveling suspension on Tourings.

Where values sit

Good six-cylinder cars sit in the low teens, and the 540i is in the high teens, with 6-speed manuals bringing more. The M5 is around $29k for good examples, and well below what the E28 M5 commands.

The verdict

For the most car per dollar, buy an E34 M5 now while it's still undervalued. For a more relaxed daily, find a 540i 6-speed.
